The story of Sabroso begins with Flightcult, a gallery in Hato Rey running from 2012-2016. In 2012, Antonio Del Valle Lago’s mother, who had a beauty salon, decided to scale back her involvement in the business and offered Del Valle Lago half the space. He transformed the front of the salon into a gallery while retaining the back as a functioning hair salon. Flightcult became a space for the local artists, most of them known acquaintances of Del Valle Lago, addressing the lack of opportunities for emerging artists. At the time, the area had only two galleries, and art events often featured the same small group of artists.

To support Flightcult, Del Valle Lago and his collaborators organized grassroots fundraising events such as car washes and pool parties. These efforts helped create a vital platform for many artists who have since gone on to thrive in their careers. One of Flightcult’s final exhibitions, "Sabroso Nostalgic," featuring the work of Franco Frontera, left a profound impression on Del Valle Lago. The exhibition inspired the name Sabroso, a name Antonio adopted for his new curatorial project, with Franco’s full blessing.

Officially founded in 2017, Sabroso’s roots trace back to plans set in motion as early as 2016. Sabroso has always been dedicated to cultivating meaningful, lasting relationships with artists. Two artists, in particular—Larissa De Jesús Negrón and Hernán Ayala Tirado—have been there from the very beginning, not only as collaborators but also as integral members of the Sabroso team today. Del Valle Lago explains, "Having long-standing relationships with artists, witnessing their growth—that is what Sabroso embodies. Since 2017, we have been supporting artists, guiding them, and helping them advance to achieve greater things and become stronger in their craft. Sabroso is precisely that. I strive to blend established artists with emerging talents to demonstrate why relationships are essential in curating exhibitions."

Sabroso’s approach is inherently collaborative. "We know many artists, and I am deeply committed to supporting the early stages of an artist’s career. Many artists possess a unique spark, and Sabroso has always been observant and proactive in recognizing this potential. Our goal is to help them ascend to higher tiers of exhibitions, galleries, and sales. Each collaboration is just the beginning; we continuously explore new avenues together," Del Valle Lago emphasized.
Beyond curating exhibitions, Sabroso represents artists who are deeply dedicated to their vision. "We stand with artists who are fully committed, taking them from one stage to the next. Our focus is always on the culture and showcasing the artist’s maximum potential." 

Del Valle Lago and his team are driven by a mission to democratize art and make it accessible to a wider audience. "Coming from a middle-class art community, we understand the disparities within the art world. Our aim is to democratize art and explore sustainable ways to fulfill our vision. We want people to realize they can be a part of this movement. Too often, individuals feel that art isn’t for them and we believe true democratization is about making art an integral part of everyday life."

In 2020, Sabroso achieved a significant milestone when they curated an exhibition for De Jesús Negrón in New York City. This event marked the beginning of a new chapter, enabling the project to forge valuable connections and experience substantial growth. Reflecting on this history, Del Valle Lago explained: "This is an idea that surpasses me, and I have always acknowledged that from the start. That’s why I have always sought to collaborate with others in this project—it’s never just about me.”

SABROSO! is a curatorial project and art advisory born in Puerto Rico, dedicated to supporting visual artists and empowering them to explore new mediums and expand their creative horizons. By fostering meaningful relationships and strategic partnerships, we serve as cultural locksmiths—opening doors to global opportunities, connecting artists with collectors, galleries, museum acquisitions, and innovative platforms for showcasing their work.  

We amplify diverse artistic practices through carefully curated group exhibitions, participation in international art fairs, art direction and art editions while creating spaces for collaboration and experimentation.
